Once a stronghold of the mighty Majapahit Kingdom, the East Java city of Surabaya is often referred to as ‘The City of Heroes’. Shortly after the Japanese capitulation in 1945, during the days that the Dutch tried to re-establish Dutch colonial rule in Indonesia, Surabaya freedom fighters stormed Hotel Oranje to down the Dutch red-white-and-blue flag and to undo it from its blue color. In doing so, these freedom fighters created the red-and-white flag that today has become Indonesia’s national symbol. That very day, Hotel Oranje was renamed Hotel Merdeka (Freedom Hotel).
Today, Hotel Oranje is named Hotel Majapahit, and this Art Deco monument, built in 1910 by the famous hotelier brothers Sarkies, stands proud as one of Surabaya’s most prominent historic buildings.
From East Java, the Majapahit kings controlled for hundreds of years an empire that dominated large parts of the Indonesian archipelago, the Malay Peninsula as well as part of the Philippines.
Today Surabaya is a modern metropolitan city where trade is the predominant source of income and that finds a busy distribution center for goods in the port of Tanjung Perak. Surabaya is also the gateway to the Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park, an area of 500 square kilometers that is home to Mount Bromo, an active volcano whose active crater can be viewed from the rim of its caldera. From several viewing points, one can witness a more than spectacular sunrise for which thousands upon thousands make the early morning trip to this Bromo Tengger Semeru National Park.
Surabaya city is home to five 18-hole courses that are close to the city’s center. These are the Bukit Darmo Golf Club, the Golf Graha Family & Country Club, the Ciputra Golf, Club & Hotel, and the somewhat outdated layout of the Yani Golf Club. The Pakuwan Golf & Family Club offers so called executive golf with a par 3 layout of 18 holes.
Some 45 minutes south of the city golfers can play the two spectacular courses of the Finna Golf & Country Club and the Taman Dayu Golf Club & Resort. Combine these fabulous courses with all that can be found on tourism and leisure in and around Surabaya, then it’s no wonder that Surabaya is considered one of Indonesia’s most prominent golf destinations.
